M.W.S GREATOREX

Michael Walter Seaton Greatorex (Mick) – Businessman and Inaugural President of the Central Australian Show Society CASS.
Mick was born in London. The family moved to WA in 1907 where later, they bought a farm in the Darken area. Mick enlisted in the AIF during World War II and served overseas. After discharge he moved to Darwin and served with the Department of Lands there and then in Alice Springs. He was also with the Native Affairs Branch in Darwin and surveyed parts of Arnhem Land. Mick left the Government service and became a partner in John Waters Insurance Agency. When he came to Alice Springs, he joined his brother Tony and John Marriott who operated an insurance and commission agency known as Greatorex and Marriott and Waters Company.

Keenly interested in the formation of the CASS, Mick was unanimously elected Inaugural President of the first Alice Springs Show, held at Anzac Oval in April 1960. He was re-elected President the following year and was awarded Life Membership. In 1988 the CASS named the newly enlarged and then the largest commercial pavilion, the Greatorex Building, to honour Mick’s dedicated service. Mick died in 1961 and was survived by his wife Kath, and son Michael.
